In the first quarter of 2024, a significant proportion of internet users in India, approximately 20%, fell victim to cyber threats. Among these, around 22.9% encountered web-borne threats, while 20.1% were susceptible to local threats.
According to a study conducted by Kaspersky, web threats primarily targeted browsers and social media platforms, exploiting vulnerabilities in browser plugins. Additionally, file-less malware emerged as a particularly dangerous threat, with cybercriminals leveraging legitimate tools within systems to execute attacks, eliminating the need for users to download malicious files.
Social engineering tactics such as phishing, baiting, and pretexting also remained prevalent methods of cyber attacks on Indian users.
During the first quarter of 2024, a Kaspersky Security Network (KSN) report indicated that over 12 million distinct internet-borne cyber threats were thwarted.
Purshottam Bhatia, Head of Sales for Consumer Solutions in South Asia at Kaspersky, emphasized that malware remains a significant concern for users and organizations in India. Targeted malware attacks and stealth threats continue to pose substantial risks, exploiting user vulnerabilities across systems.
