The Madhya Pradesh State Cyber Police has issued an advisory informing people about rise in cyber crime and misuse of data. The warning comes on the back of fears of massive data breach in which email IDs, passwords and other personal details of internet users have been hacked. Authorities cautioned that cybercriminals frequently take advantage of leaked data like such to hack into social media, bank accounts and commit online scams.

The city’s cyber police department advised residents to change their passwords right away and stop sharing the same password across multiple accounts. It highlights the need to develop strong passwords, switch on two-factor authentication and stay up-to-date with security settings. They are also being asked to avoid clicking on suspicious links, downloading any unknown file or responding to the message that asks for personal and financial information such as OTPs and bank account number.

The cyber police also called on the public to be cautious in monitoring their online accounts for strange behavior. A release appealed to the public to report about any case of cyber fraud, hacking or identity theft on either cyber crime helpline or nearest police station.

They also stressed the importance of spreading awareness among children, senior citizens and first-time internet users who are often easier prey for cyber scams. According to the cyber police, simple digital safety precautions can dramatically reduce opportunities for crime and make for a safer online environment overall.
